Mark Schultz was a 3-time NCAA champion, Olympic champion and 2-time World champion wrestler. He also joined the Mormon church in 1991 shortly after being hired as a BYU wrestling coach. Mark coached wrestling at BYU for around a decade.

A few months ago, Mark started studying factual LDS church history - focusing specifically on Joseph Smith's polygamy revelation in D&C Section 132 - and lost his Mormon faith. He reached out to John this week requesting to tell his story.

In Parts 1 and 2 of this series Mike, John, and Nemo explored the history and controversies over whether the Book of Abraham is a literal translation of Egyptian as claimed by Joseph Smith.

Now for Part 3 they are back to look at what the text of the Book of Abraham actually says, including many prime LDS doctrines. What have been the consequences of believing those doctrines? Does the Book of Abraham merit being considered “revelation” and therefore binding to believing Saints today?

Carol discusses ways that she has enabled herself mentally and spiritually to stay in the Church, despite periods of inactivity and varying levels of hope. Has she gone through a “faith crisis” as many know it? What did she keep and what has she thrown away? Why does she stay?

How does Carol feel she makes a difference by staying in and also how and why has she been able to avoid excommunication, a common fate for those who undertake advocacy in the Church and come under the ire of leadership?

Carol Lynn Pearson is an amazing woman and still-active member of the Church who has done more advocacy for feminism and LGBTQ rights than any other member and for far longer through her songs, books, poetry, speaking engagements and other appearances (even Oprah)!

Carol Lynn Pearson is the example and embodiment of pure love. Anyone would do well to follow her example.

In today's episode, Carol describes how she finds both feminine and masculine traits in the divine, and in such a lovely way that even hard-core atheists can find beauty and inspiration in her thoughts.

Today we’re going through various apologetics and theories around the Book of Abraham to reconcile it being considered scripture along with what we know the literal interpretation of these things to be. What problems do these apologetics create in other areas for believers?  Do these theories hold water without a strong bias to believe in spite of all evidence? Do some apologists even admit it?

Welcome back for part two!

A trip to Europe gives Kelsey a chance beyond her mission to see more of the outside world and the goodness and happiness that others have found while clearly outside of Mormonism. The trip also gives her the chance to tune in to herself and trust her intuition. Not ready to give up on her religion just yet, Kelsey returns home after the trip and ends up working with LDS Public Relations in various projects while also holding the calling of Relief Society President as she works through her active doubts.

Kelsey moves back to LA and finally realizes how much of a “box” LDS doctrines & beliefs put herself in. Kelsey takes us on a journey of personal discovery as she learns who she really is & to trust her own authority, leading her to the freest and fulfilled life she’s experienced thus far.

Kelsey Edwards has a unique upbringing as a child actor who was homeschooled by her Mormon parents. Driven by a desire to do what’s right and excel, Kelsey develops a perfectionism that goes beyond religious adherence into body image and leads to disordered eating. Kelsey is able to recover with help from her parents, only to be thrown into another family crisis as her father succumbs to an opiate addiction after chronic back pain and leaves both the Church and the family. As many children do, Kelsey feels she shares blame for the destruction of her family and re-commits to the LDS religion for strength and comfort.

When her family moves to Provo, Utah, Mormon purity culture has costs for Kelsey’s self-esteem and body image as she continues pursuing performance at high school and BYU. Kelsey’s first doubts come as she serves a mission in Birmingham Alabama and grapples with the spirituality and fulfillment members of other faiths feel. Kelsey realizes belief in “eternal families” is far from unique to Mormonism but what IS unique about the Mormon version is the dark element that it’s predicated on a God deliberately separating families first.

Nearly since its founding, leaders of the LDS Church have excommunicated members for wrongdoing. In earlier times, such punishments might have lasted only weeks. Over the course of succeeding decades, this practice became more severe, constituting a wrenching removal from the community. Gaining readmittance often required intense penance and evidence of significant change stretching over a prolonged period of time. Sometimes this process even involved the leaders' colleagues. Justice and Mercy offers in-depth examinations of several high-profile case studies in church discipline, using journals and other sources close to the participants to provide candid detail.

Today we interview author Gary James Bergera and Editor Bryan Buchanan.

John and Scott discuss Brian Harris, a recent guest on Rameumptom Ruminations who was an employee at church headquarters in the correlation department. Brian offers us a chance to pull back the curtain and learn a little bit more about what goes on behind the scenes. How does the church gather and use data from its members? How far up the chain does that data go? What goes into the creation, revising, or scrapping of church programs?

When Douglas Stilgoe, AKA "Nemo the Mormon" on YouTube, no longer felt he could publicly sustain Mormonism's top leadership of apostles & prophets due to multiple acts of demonstrable dishonesty, he lost one of Mormonism's highest privileges: the ability to attend the Temple.

For Mormons, Temple worship goes FAR beyond religious ceremony. It is the gate by which believing Mormons qualify for Exaltation, the highest level of Heaven & privilege in the after-life according to Mormon theology, and by which marriages & family relationships are "sealed" together for eternity. Thus, losing the privilege of Temple worship doesn't just risk an individual's OWN eternal reward, but also puts one's eternal marriage and other family ties in jeopardy, some even to the extent of believing that faithful spouses and children will be "reassigned" to a faithful stranger who will replace the unbelieving spouse or parent in Heaven.

It is also synonymous with personal "worthiness", so any Mormons not permitted inside are often thought to be committing or in the process of repenting from egregious sins, such as adultery. Mormons who are not considered "worthy" to perform Temple ordinances themselves are also barred from even attending ordinances - like weddings - of any friends and family that take place there, another significant source of pain and alienation for some.

Naturally, Doug found it problematic that for believing Mormons, such important things as Exaltation and Eternal Family can be held hostage and denied for something as simple as refusing to agree to sustain leaders who, by virtue of a supposedly secret ordinance known as the "Second Anointing," are exempt from any accountability towards members of the Church, even for bold, deliberate acts of harm and dishonesty.

...or are they?

This episode documents attempts made by Doug (Nemo) to get to the bottom of whether Mormon doctrines & practices meant to instill accountability from its earliest days and scripture are still applicable today, or whether they've become mere ritual, devoid of any meaningful significance other than virtue-signaling conformity and a continued commitment to blind obedience. As a squeaky wheel unable to be assuaged or silenced by local leadership, Nemo surprises everyone (including himself) when he manages to bypass the usual gatekeepers and break through the glass ceiling separating Mormonism's apostles and prophets from the rank-and-file, successfully garnering the attention of none other than second highest-ranking apostle and next in line to become prophet, Dallin H. Oaks.

How did it go? Tune it to find out!

Tani Berlo was raised in Australia as a biracial Mormon of Maori descent.  Showing an early love for history, Tani asked many questions of her LDS seminary teacher regarding science and history that caused concern.  This included questioning the validity of the "Lamanite" identity (from the Book of Mormon) handed to her as a descendent of the Maori people.

Later in Tani's teenage years she was shamed by her LDS church leaders for normative sexual exploration, and was ultimately summoned to a disciplinary council where she was asked sexually explicit questions by multiple men, and was disfellowshipped by the church.  This led to significant sexual shame as a temple married Latter-day saint.  After having children, Tani experienced significant post-partum depression and an opiate addiction, which when combined with her questioning of Mormon truth claims, led to a full-on faith crisis.

Today Tani hosts a TikTok channel on history with over 1.1 million followers.

This is Tani's Mormon story.

In this Part 2 of 3, we return to Jeff & Larissa's story. Now married, Larissa gives up her University Studies to help Jeff through Med school. They share their struggles with infertility, the adoption process, and adopting black children as orthodox Mormons.

Larissa faces difficulties in early motherhood and building resentment as they settle into traditional LDS gender roles. Larissa feels she is losing herself wrapped up in her husband's life, while at the same time trying to silence that part of her that is unhappy, seeing it as "wrong."

Larissa is called as a RS President, even as she becomes more vocally progressive/feminist and has hope for the Church to change, but it doesn't last.

Jeff realizes the Gospel can't fix Larissa's unhappiness as the root cause is Patriarchy. He serves in Bishoprics for 7 years before discovering more about Church history from the CES Letter, and Rough Stone Rolling, with the Gospel Topics Essays being the final straw.

Jeff & Larissa finally recognize the level of harm of systemic racism & sexism in Mormonism and no longer wish to be a part of it.

Join us for two unique Mormon Stories as John Dehlin & Samantha Shelley interview Tommy & Madison Johnson. Tommy made fans and haters on both sides of belief when he hit the TikTok scene during COVID with funny skits on the peculiarities of Mormonism. What viewers couldn't see was that Tommy was struggling to know how to deal with many of the messier topics in Church History as well as the darker sides of modern Mormon doctrines such as the stance against the LGBTQ+ community, which includes his own sister, while ALSO navigating his mixed-faith marriage with Madison who stopped believing entirely after their Temple Marriage. Madison describes her life as having been "born into a faith crisis" due to stigma and family shame around being conceived out of wedlock by a teen mother. Madison's struggles with the faith continued through most of her life despite her levels of activity/involvement in the Church, even through her Temple Marriage with Tom. Madison leaves the Church upon finding the CES letter and she and Tommy work through what this will mean for their marriage, and even end up on an episode of the podcast "Marriage on a Tightrope" with Katie & Allan Mount. They finish off with where the couple is at today and how life is going since all of the changes they've been through. Guests:

Today’s episode continues the discussion on Polygamy with the (in)famous revelation still canonized in Mormon/LDS scripture as Section 132 of the Doctrine & Covenants. Mike sets up the historical & personal context of the timing of this revelation and the problematic ideas presented in it as coming from God including how God views women, redefining adultery and other moral issues, and the various rules and justifications given by God to practice polygamy.

Mike goes on to show that Joseph admits himself that polygamy is something he wanted, and despite being the receiver of the various specific rules defined by God, he nevertheless proceeds to break every one of them.

Finally, Mike goes over the many apologetics around this section of the Doctrine & Covenants and the problems with most of the arguments attempting to justify the revelation, Joseph’s polygamy, and the resulting polygamy among many of the branches of Mormonism, some continuing to this day.

Join Mike and John as they discuss Mormonism’s early connection with Masonry through Joseph Smith and the unique problems it creates for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to grapple with today.

Covered topics include the timeline of Joseph becoming a Master Mason before introducing the similarly-themed rituals of the Temple Endowment Ceremony, why many members and apologists claim Masonry to be of ancient origin despite evidence to the contrary, the many parallels between the secret rituals of both organizations, and whether or the Temple Endowment involved false doctrines.

Trigger Warning: Suicidal Ideation

Evan Smith rose through the ranks of Mormon leadership ultimately becoming a Stake Presidency member. While serving as an LDS Bishop, Evan struggled with the Church’s positions on LGBTQ+ issues and later found out that his son Weston was gay. Even after coming out, Weston decided to serve an LDS Mission as an openly gay man, leading him to high levels of depression and heartbreaking experiences during and after coming back early from his mission.

Evan became an advocate for LGBTQ people in the Church. His position as a Stake Presidency Counselor led him to a few confrontations/discussions with General Authorities and a later meeting at Church Headquarters where they discussed Evan’s progressive beliefs on LGBTQ matters.

In Part 3 of 3, Evan describes getting called as a Stake Counselor, his attempts to be an ally for LGBTQ individuals and his subsequent faith crisis. Evan has a few debates/confrontations with Area Seventy Elder McCune (higher than Stake Presidency in Mormon leadership) over his gay son. Evan emails Apostles and other leaders on how the Church can change to be more loving and accepting of LGBTQ members resulting in a meeting with General Authority Allen D. Haynie. Evan continues faith deconstruction when his wife begins her faith crisis, and they both come to see the issues with sexism in the Church, biblical scholarship opening up new issues, and the family’s ultimate decision to leave the Church.

Join Mike from LDSdiscussions.com and John as they discuss race and Mormon scripture. This is part 1 of a 2-part series. We are also grateful to have a few call-in guests for this episode.

Today’s episode covers:

  • Personal stories from black members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) of the racist things said to them and ways they were treated, and how psychologically harmful the racist doctrines have been for them
  • The most problematic verses and teaching of past prophets from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that specifically highlight dark or black skin as a curse directly from God
  • Context and proof showing the belief literally meant dark skin and was not an idiom or euphemism for anything else
  • The early belief that the skin color of Indigenous North Americans could/did actually change to become lighter when converting to Mormonism and living more “righteously”
  • The Book of Abraham as evidence of Joseph Smith’s racism, codifying racism into scripture for ALL black people, not just as a curse specific to North American Indigenous people as stated in the Book of Mormon.
  • The doctrinal basis for the early Mormon ban against black people worshiping and marrying in the Temple, as well as the ban against black Mormon men from receiving the Priesthood, the authority needed to hold any leadership position in the Church as well as perform essential saving ordinances such as baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost etc.
  • The real reasons the Church was pressured to lift the ban and the measures taken to make it happen despite continued vehement opposition among some Church leaders.

  • Greg's mission experiences, many made more difficult by knowledge of his relationship with Elder Wirthlin
  • What Greg learned at Weber that began affecting his testimony
  • How often General Authorities miss out on family activities and events in service to the Church
  • How the Church deals with aging apostles once they begin to lose lucidity
  • How Greg lost his LDS testimony in spite of descending from the Mormon "elite," and what led him to want to tell his story.

Also, Greg shares his opinion on whether his grandfather actually "saw" Jesus Christ as an LDS apostle. We hope you enjoy!!!

Join us for Part 1 of our 2-part interview with pilot Greg Gerritsen - grandson of the late and much believed Mormon or LDS Church apostle Joseph B. Wirthlin. In this series, Greg shares with us many fascinating stories about his experiences with his grandfather including:

  • The tendency of LDS church members to overly worship General Authorities, along with the unhealthy obsession some Mormons have with "access" to General Authorities.
  • The undying love Elder Wirthlin had for his wife (Elisa), his family, and for football.
  • The extent to which nepotism, cronyism, and patronage play a part in the selection of LDS church General Authorities.
  • The downsides/sacrifices of being an LDS church Apostle/General Authority.
  • The existence of divisions and "cliques" in the LDS church quorum of the 12 Apostles.
  • The unhealthy pressures and expectations put on the children and grandchildren of LDS General Authorities, that often lead to a familial emphasis on "public appearance" over healthy relationships.
  • The "code" that exists within families of LDS General Authorities to never do or say anything to bring dishonor to the family name or church, including speaking out about a loss of faith, which leads many descendants of LDS apostles to lie about and/or hide their loss of faith.

John takes the hot seat this time as Rick Bennett from YouTube Channel Gospel Tangents does the interviewing. Gospel Tangents is a channel looking to represent a 360 degree view of Mormonism and welcomes guests representing various views and experiences of the Restoration Gospel started by Joseph Smith.

Rick calls John Dehlin the "grandfather" of Mormon podcasting. Not that he's old, but rather internet-old! Rick asks John about his journey in and out of the Church, dating an Oscar-winning actress in high school, some of his dealing with general authorities, and his excommunication and aftermath. They also discuss his tangles with apologists & neo-apologists, the Swedish Rescue, and whether he really wants people to stay LDS.

The Mormon Church has struggled with the engraved racist passages in its most holy book of scripture such as the divine curse that came upon the Lamanites turning them into loathsome people with a skin of blackness. Anthropologist Dr. Thomas Murphy joined John and Gerardo to discuss racism in The Book of Mormon and how Joseph Smith stole native culture, mixed it with racist ideas of his time, published it, and sold it as theirs. We also discuss how these racist ideas contained in the Book of Mormon have transcended into modern Mormon Culture and beliefs.

TRIGGER WARNING: Mentions of Sexual Assault, Rape, Child Abuse

In light of the recent Associated Press article about the Mormon church abuse hotline, we decided to ask our podcast listeners if any of them had ever been discouraged by Mormon leadership from reporting abuse to the police. Hundreds of listeners responded with concrete, and heart-wrenching examples. In Friday's episode, John and Jenn will be reading many of the accounts (scrubbed of identifying information), so as to highlight the longstanding and ongoing problem of abuse cases NOT being reported to police within the Mormon church.

Join John as he interviews Utah Representative Angela Romero, Lindsey Lundholm, and Dr. Julie Hanks about the upcoming Protect Kids rally, in favor of requiring clergy to report abuse.

ALL adults across the state, without exception, should be mandated to report child abuse. Representative Angela Romero has championed this legislation over the past two years. She is sponsoring the rally and will be the keynote speaker. Lindsey Lundholm is the grassroots organizer for the Protect Kids rally, and passionate about giving children one more safe line of defense against abuse. As a therapist and member of the LDS faith, Dr. Julie Hanks, stands in support of eliminating the clergy loophole. Please join us at the south steps of the Utah State Capitol this Friday @ 6:30pm. WEAR TEAL in support of SA survivors.

More details here: https://fb.me/e/2G8FC1foR

For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed live. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held fully online via Facebook live at 6:30pm on Friday, August 19th. Currently in Utah law, clergy are exempt from mandatory reporting of child abuse. Recent news stories have highlighted how this exception can lead to serious harm for children, and a grey area for clergy.

Let’s make the law clear: protecting children from abuse is the first priority. We are rallying to educate and encourage the state to pass laws that close the clergy loophole. We believe this is the year we can get it passed, to provide a safer Utah for children.

TRIGGER WARNING: Mentions of Sexual Assault, Rape, Child Abuse

When a father of a 5-year-old girl who was in counseling with his Mormon Bishop admitted to abusing his daughter, the Bishop followed the guidance of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and called a so-called "helpline" and he was advised by Church Lawyers to tell no one. The man continued to abuse his daughter for 7 more years and went on to assault her newborn sister. The AP has done a deep investigation into the Mormon Church's mishandling of child abuse and their article from last week has spread like wildfire.

The LDS Church has put its PR department and news media outlets on high alert and they issued an official response and at least two articles trying to respond to the egregious revelations by the Associated Press.

Join John, Gerardo, and Utah criminal defense attorney Brenton Erickson as they do a deep dive into the AP article and analyze whether the Church adequately explained the alarming allegations in the article.

Join us as we welcome Jessica Parker to the Thrive Stories podcast to discuss her journey of accepting and finding peace in infertility. As a woman who was raised in a faithful Latter-day Saint home, Jessica absorbed all the messages about the role of women and her divine purpose to bear children. She served a mission, got married in the temple, and gave her time and energy to the church for years. All of this came into question when Jessica began her faith journey--which then led to deconstructing and rebuilding her innate sense of value, identity, and purpose as a human being.

Thrive Stories is a podcast series where Margi (alongside John or Jenn) interviews a member of the community once per month. The interviews are shorter (2-3 hours), story-based, and are focused on a particular aspect of healing and growth AFTER a Mormon faith crisis (thus the THRIVE name). They generally happen on Tuesdays at noon (MST). Some examples of areas of thriving include: Family Relationships, Healthy Boundaries, Finding Community, Finding Meaning/Purpose, Dealing with Grief/Death, Religion after Mormonism, Health Sexuality, Parenting, Improving Physical Health, Identity, Health Marriage/Relationships, Secular Spirituality, Word of Wisdom 2.0, and Women Finding Their Own Voice after Mormonism.

If you would like to nominate someone you know who would be a great candidate for a THRIVE interview, please nominate them (or yourself) here.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is known globally for its massive missionary force. Over the past year we have received several independent reports suggesting serious distress in the Mormon missionary program, including:

  • A sharp decline in the number of LDS missionaries overall.
  • A sharp decline in the number of young men willing to serve missions.
  • A significant increase in the number of LDS missionaries returning home early.
  • Troubling new rhetoric/teachings from Mormon church leadership suggesting (out of seeming desperation) that Mormon missionary service for young men is mandatory/compulsory.

On Thursday at 4pm (mountain) we will be exploring this issue. If you have any data or stories regarding these (or other) developments regarding Mormon missionary work, please post them as comments below, or email us at: mormonstories@gmail.com and we can include your input in the show (anonymously if requested). Also, please plan to join us live for this show, wherein we hope to accept live video call-ins from viewers.

Ari talks about growing up in the picture perfect Mormon family, and how it all crumbled when she was excommunicated from that family for speaking out against abuse. In this episode, we discuss how Ari lost her faith in the church when she realized that it, too was rooted in abuse and lies, and set on excommunicating those who spoke out against those things. In her discovery, she concluded that the church creates toxic family systems and even abuse cycles. Ari and Adam are parents to 9 kids, and are now cycle breakers.

What happens when a true believing mormon mom discovers that two of her “future missionary” sons are gay/queer/nonbinary? Just when Linda Barney thought she had the perfect life planned for her family, she discovered that letting her kids be exactly who they are and loving them unconditionally was a far happier and healthier path to follow than the one she had always been taught to believe in. Join us for this compelling Thrive Stories episode about Parenting LGBTQIA children.

Thrive Stories is a new podcast series where Margi (alongside John or Jenn) will be interviewing a member of the community twice per month.  The interviews will be shorter (1-2 hours), story-based, but will be focused on a particular aspect of healing and growth AFTER a Mormon faith crisis (thus the THRIVE name).  They will happen on Tuesdays at noon (MST). Some examples of areas of thriving include:  Family Relationships, Healthy Boundaries, Finding Community, Finding Meaning/Purpose, Dealing with Grief/Death, Religion after Mormonism, Health Sexuality, Parenting, Improving Physical Health, Identity, Health Marriage/Relationships, Secular Spirituality, Word of Wisdom 2.0, and Women Finding Their Own Voice after Mormonism.

Singer songwriter Ellee Duke and her husband Auz Engemann share what life was like growing up in affluent (even idyllic) Mormon communities (Provo and Draper, Utah) and why they decided to eventually distance themselves from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Ellee explains how she got her start in music, why she turned down American idol, and what challenges she had to overcome to finally bring her career into alignment with what she truly wanted—without losing herself in the expectations of others.

Other topics include Auz’ connections to big names like Larry David and the Osmonds, his struggle with Adderall addiction, the dangers of bishop roulette, and Ellee losing her gay uncle to suicide.

We also premiere Ellee’s newest single about her Mormon faith crisis entitled “Deeper” - available on Spotify.

Join Margi and John for our next episode of Thrive Stories. Samantha Shelley (co-host of Zelph on the Shelf) will be stopping by the studio to share her journey from childhood growing up in England in an atheist/agnostic home through her teen years where she converted to Mormonism and into young adulthood when Sam left the church and began to rebuild her life and sense of self. We will talk about the wounds that emerged during those years as well as how Sam coped. If you have ever wondered about what it means to heal ourselves, this is the conversation for you! If you are interested in hearing more about reparenting, conscious coping, healing, or if you just want to hear some wisdom from Samantha--we would love to have you join us!

Christine Carol Robinson Burton is the niece of the late Mormon prophet Gordon B. Hinckley, and the daughter of Oliver Preston Robinson and Christine Hinckley Robinson.  Christine's father, Preston or "Pres" was a prominent professor of advertising a the University of Utah, general manager of the Deseret News Publishing Company and editor of the Deseret News, and a personal mentor to the late Mormon prophet Thomas S. Monson.  Preston was mentioned seven different times in the LDS Church-approved biography of Thomas S. Monson.

In Christine's heartbreaking and inspiring story, she relates several tragic Mormon-related stories, including:

  • Experiencing psychological, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her parents.
  • Feeling deep confusion trying to reconcile her parents' abuse with her own self-worth, given that her parents/family were publicly lauded on multiple occasions by several Mormon prophets as being exemplary.  This included her father being called as mission president in England, and both of her parents receiving their Second Anointing after the abuse.
  • Her attempts to tell both Gordon B. Hinckley and Thomas S. Monson (as sitting prophets/apostles) about the abuse she experienced at the hands of her parents - wherein she was told by both that she needed to "put it behind her."
  • The death by suicide of her gay son.
  • Her loss of Mormon faith.
  • Her commitment to helping others heal and grow after Mormonism.

We hope you find value in this heartbreaking and inspiring episode.

To what extent are Joseph Smith & Warren Jeffs similar vs. different?

The new Netflix documentary called "Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey" deals with the history of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its current prophet Warren Jeffs.

In today's episode, John and Jenn are joined by:

  • Sam and Melissa from the super popular "Growing Up in Polygamy" YouTube channel.  Sam was raised in the FLDS church under Rulon and Warren Jeffs, and Melissa was raised in the mainstream LDS/Mormon church.
  • Joanna, also raised in the FLDS church.

The focus for today's episode will be the similarities and differences between Mormon church founder Joseph Smith and FLDS church prophet Warren Jeffs.
